AS THE PREMIER INITIATIVE OF SLOW FOOD YUCATÁN, the Board of Directors of the local chapter recently launched the first weekly farmer's market in Mérida. Its express purpose is to promote Slow Food values by nurturing organic production and supporting regional culinary traditions.
Known as Mercado Fresco de Slow Food, the market is held every Saturday from 9:00am until 1:00pm – but come early because our excellent vendors sell out fast! To whet your appetite, here is a roster of just a few of the offerings from recent weeks: free range chicken eggs; quail and quail eggs; fresh organic tofu; organic peanut butters and local honeys; organic spinach, kale, chard and herbs; regional produce that comes from no more than 50km outside Mérida; artisanal dips as well as baked goods like breads, pizzas and muffins; fresh fish from Celestun; locally grown cashews; and even organic compost with live earthworms!
One of the great pleasures of the market is that it is developing into a wonderful social scene. The Board of Directors originally had doubts as to whether Mérida locals would support the concept – but in fact the profile of visitors to the market appears to be quite evenly divided between Yucatecans and extranjeros. All meet and mingle and shop – and some even eat their treats before they get home!
The market is located on Avenida Reforma just north of Colon. For more information and a map with directions, download the PDF document above.
